Acoms Ap35 – Pre FET electronic speed controller

The Ap35, released in 1982, is a very early electronic speed controller, that was designed and produced in the UK by the British Acoms and Tamiya distributor RiKo (Richard Konstam Ltd.). It was sold under the Acoms brand, but was not an actual Acoms product per se. It was custom made for the Tamiya SRB range, with the power transistor using the SRB’s gear box as a heat sink. There are at least two versions of the manual in existence, a mk.1 version that says the transistor should be mounted directly to the gear box, and a mk.2 version that calls for a special mica (a sheet silicate mineral) insulator to be used. There are also translated versions, at least there is a german mk.2 manual.

There were two different “confirmed” transistors provided with the AP35:
– Darlington type NPN TIP140 (10 A)
– Darlington type NPN TIP3055 (15 A)

Manuals, English v1 & v2 as well as German v1 can be found in the document repository.
