Vintage ESCs

Vintage electronic speed controllers can basically be divided into two categories, pre FET and FET.

Pre FET controllers use one ore more “standard” power transistors. These power transistors, often referred to as “Darlington pairs”, have a voltage drop of almost 1 volt, thus needing relays to provide full power.

FET (and MOSFET etc) controllers use field effect transistors (FETs) with a much lower voltage drop, eliminating the use for bypass relays.
